[plt-scheme] DrScheme font smoothing

I'm running DrScheme on a remote X server using vnc, and drscheme--unlike other apps--isn't doing any font smoothing. This is 4.2.3 compiled from source, and both Xft and cairo are installed and detected by configure.  

In fact, the font problems are much more severe than that.  The menu shows 15 or 30 entries, but most of them have no effect; that is, choosing the new font doesn't change the face at all.  Some of them--generally, the ones that begin with a hyphen--do seem to have an effect, but it's generally not a nice one.

Also, the icons in the image below look pretty yucky.

This is on a super-bare-bones debian lenny installation, and there's probably something REALLY OBVIOUS that needs to be installed or fixed.
