To distinguish between linear and quadratic, probably thousands to millions (depending on whether "noticeable" means "to a human being" or "to the time form").  To distinguish between linear and n*log(n), I would think millions or tens of millions.

But the Horner's algorithm solution is also shorter code than either of the others :-)
