That part works as it is written in the documentation. If you modify a
file and do not save it, it creates the autosave file after 5 minutes
(or something). Then if you close without saving, it removes the
autosave file.

But the problem, as it's clarified, is that the timer does not care the
last save, but does the autosave for any file that is outdated.
