The analogy is perfect, you just failed to use the wrong words.

We often say that "an author __writes novels__" in order to
distinguish it from "my son wrote an essay for his high school
class." Indeed, you can also hear/read "X authored another
novel."

Subtle distinctions, for the trained ear, trying not to
emphasize the differences
