Now, there is an understatement.

In my small circle of curriculum influence there is a great deal of
resistance to the Ht-series. One of the major reasons is recursion. I
was told many times that it is too hard for beginners. I figured that
a productive approach would be to show how to develop a non-trivial
recursive program. Much to my surprise at the time, the problem was
that those teaching did not understand recursion. I am still trying to
figure out how to get them into a classroom to teach them about
recursion.
