I have some Java apps (DbVisualizer, oXygen, OpenMap, IntelliJ, Magic  
Draw UML, JFormDesigner) that I favor because I can run them on Mac  
OS X, GNU/Linux, Windows, Solaris (sometimes).  The folks who build  
those apps do a good job of making sure I can move between platforms  
with relative ease.

DrScheme does well in that area too.
