Three theories/comments:

  1. Smart and driven students who in the past might've focused solely
on CS might now be spending their free time loading up on biology
     classes.

  2. There are always a handful of students who do discretionary coding,
but I suspect it hasn't been the norm among CS students for
     decades.

  3. Computers provide a more interesting as a user experience than they
used to. You can "surf" the multimedia Web, pirate MP3s, write in
your blog, and play 3D MMORPGs all day. Used to be, you could only
browse netnews for so long before you had to code something just to
     break the monotony.
