Not really an answer to your question, but since you seem receptive to 
new keybindings:

with ESC-(, you get a matching pair of balanced parens.  Want to wrap a 
bunch of s-expressions in a pair of parens?  Just highlight them all 
(try shift-opt-left or -right) and hit the some ESC-(.

Also works for ESC-{, ESC-[, and (I think) ESC-|.

Voila!  No more unmatched parens, ever.
