[plt-scheme] *.zo File Format

I've received a number of requests recently for the
Debian package of DrScheme to include pre-built zo
files.  Before agreeing to this, I had a few
questions:

1.  Are *.zo files platform independent?  (I.e., could
*.zo files generated on an x86 system work on a
PowerPC system?)

2.  I imagine *.zo files are configuration-dependent
(i.e., presence or omission of certain packages will
render certain *.zo files nonfunctional).
