Oh, I imagine it's an attempt to cut down on the number of `unsubscribe'
and other administrative messages that get posted to the list.
Determining how well this works is left as an exercise for the reader
(for full credit, be sure your answer explains the relatively high level
of `unsubscribe' traffic on debian-user, which has a similar tag in the
signature).

Doesn't mailman have an automatically-generated monthly reminder
message anyway?

Rather odd; I've never seen that complaint on any of the other mailing
lists I'm on.  As a possibility, isn't there a MIME type specifically
for signatures?

Count me in the indifferent camp --- I filter mailing lists into
separate folders based on other headers anyway.
