For what it's worth, Matthias and I made this observation back at PLI 2002 in Pittsburgh (and I think you and I have talked about this). However, we never found anything we could *do* with this observation. Perhaps we should have spent more time trying different implementations and benchmarking them. [Btw, you might consider cross-posting on the PLT blog, too...]
