Ugh.  Sorry everyone; I missed the previous messages on this thread: I
see what Rob is trying to do now.

Are the set of dynamic patterns you're allowing matching against a
closed set?  That is, do you know up front all the possible matching
patterns you'll be using, or is this a runtime value that has a
dynamic shape?
