Really?!  Wow, then I owe him a note of gratitude.

Thank you for implementing this fix, Eli.  It definitely works for
now.  The interface is a little primitive, but it reminds me of the
dired function in Emacs, so that is actually no problem; the important
aspect is that it doesn't freeze.

Thanks to this fix, now I can study such books as PLAI using DrScheme
without worrying about the file explorer dialog box freezing every few
seconds.
