Thanks you all for the explanations and tips!

Now I even know why such a setting is there in the first place. On the
german keyboard layout ( and ) are shift keys too, but [ and ] are keys
cou can only get with the Alt-Gr (right Alt) key, and are quite awkward
to type. Oh, and the automatic adjusting of the proper closing paren is
handy.
