hi,

i was just reading the python-dev newsgroup and came across a
discussion there that might be relevant to this thread.  there were
two interesting points.  first, python hashes are consistent across
programs, not just within a single execution, and this seems to be
considered a significant feature.  second, the discussion was prompted
by someone posting a claim that poor hash functions allowed denial of
service attacks (i should add that no-one seemed that worried about
this).
