If everyone follows the normal git tradition of having the commit message be a one-line summary followed by a longer description (if necessary), then I don't see a problem with putting the one-line summary in the subject.  Looking over recent commits, it seems like this should be acceptable, since commit messages tend to be short and those of us who have used longer commit messages are already following this tradition.
